The valknut, shown here in it's form as a continuous triangular knotwork, is similar, and may be related to the celtic triscele. It is seen on Scandinavian picture stones usually in association with representations of Odin. It may have been associated with his worship as the chief of the gods and god of battle and death. However it is perhaps more likely that in this context it represents fate, or wyrd, in the form of the norns, the triple goddess central to old norse belief, but which are otherwise absent from scandinavian art.
